Andalusia Public Library Children’s Librarian Caryl Lee Ray said Friday she is expecting more than 300 children to “dig into reading” this summer at the library’s summer reading program.

This year, Ray said that local teens wouldn’t be left out.

“Our first show on June 6 will be our big one,” she said. “We’ll kick it off at 1 p.m. with our teen program. We’ll have The Real Rock Band BB Fuzz, who will teach them how to play musical instruments. We are really trying to touch a different age group.”

A balloon release will be at 2:50 p.m. that day, followed by BB Fuzz for the smaller children.

Ray said that the McWane Science Center will present a program geared toward dinosaurs on June 13; DeWayne Reynolds will present his balloon show on June 20 and Skip the Magic Guy will be on hand June 27.

APL’s summer reading programs are free to the public and Ray said the library recently received a new shipment of books about Egypt, digging and gardening for children to read, along with their summer reading lists.

Preschoolers can take part in the preschool story time Fridays at 10:30 a.m., Ray said.

Additionally, children who have a knack for art, and teens who love photography can participate in the annual art and photography contest.

The art contest is for children ages 4 to 6; 7-9 and 10-12. Entries are due July 12.

The teen photography contest is open for ages 13-18 and entries are due July 31. Black and white or color photography up to an 8×10 will be accepted.

Cash prizes will be awarded.
